Epilepsy Surgery

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes recurring seizures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 36,000 Mississippians, including more than 5,000 children, live with epilepsy.

As a member of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, the University of Mississippi Medical Center provides comprehensive epilepsy care, education, and research. Specialized care at UMMC uses state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, including an ultrasonic surgical aspirator, a variety of image-guided microscope navigation systems, and interventional magnetic resonance imaging.

The epilepsy surgery and brain mapping program conducted through the neurosurgery and neurology departments at UMMC offers surgical intervention and invasive monitoring for patients with medically intractable (difficult to control) seizures or with structural lesions involving eloquent regions of the brain (which allow for communication, movement, and other vital functions).
